Low treatment adherence, along with healthcare, constitutes a global issue. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that between 30% and 50% of prescribed medications are not taken as directed. Forgetfulness, timing of medication administration, personal beliefs about illnesses and medications, and the number of medications taken simultaneously all contribute to treatment non-adherence.
Non-compliance has a significant impact on patients’ quality of life and prognosis, which is why the company Pillo has developed an automatic medication dispenser that prepares the correct dosage of multiple medications according to a personalized schedule. At the same time, it also functions as a digital assistant and communication device. It features a screen that allows users to check their medication schedule, and it also enables video calls and receipt of personalized messages.

In addition to providing medications, receiving alerts, and other health-related functions, users can also ask the device to play music, receive news, set alarms, and ask various questions to the digital assistant. Pillo also has a mobile app that allows users to schedule medications, remind them when to take them, and even communicate with medical professionals who can verify that patients comply with treatment regulations. This app will be available for iOS and Android in the coming months.
This automatic medication dispenser also features a 7-inch touchscreen, speaker, facial recognition system, Bluetooth connection, and a locking mechanism to prevent unauthorized access to the medications stored in it. The robot was showcased at the HIMSS 2018 conference in Las Vegas, which hosts over 40,000 healthcare professionals.
